grand canyon and antelope canyon

antelope canyon, arizona
The Grand Canyon trip included Antelope Canyon, a slot canyon on Navajo land in northern Arizona. The sandstone walls have been shaped by wind and water into curves that almost do not look natural, and the light moves across the stone as it comes through the opening above. It is one of the most photogenic places I have been, and still better in person than in any photo I took.
The Grand Canyon has the opposite problem, because photos undersell it every time. The gorge is more than 1.6 kilometres deep, and when you walk up to the rim, your brain keeps reaching for a frame of reference that is not there. I stood at the edge for a long time without doing much, which felt like the correct response.
